How to Find Student Accommodation in Europe Before You Fly

University residences, private rooms, scam warning signs and when to start looking.

Updated October 20262 min read

Finding a place to live is one of the most stressful parts of moving abroad, and in popular student cities the best options go early. Start before you have your visa, and you will have far more choice.

  • Start: as soon as you receive your admission letter
  • Safest first step: your university’s own housing office
  • Never: pay a deposit for a room you have not verified

Begin with your university

Most universities run or recommend student residences and publish application deadlines for them. These rooms are often cheaper and easier to prove for a visa application. Apply the day applications open, because places are limited and sometimes allocated in order of application.

Other places to look

  • Student housing providers and shared flats listed through your university
  • Official student housing platforms for the country or city
  • Student groups and international student networks connected to your university

Whichever route you choose, compare the full monthly cost, including utilities, internet and any service fees, not just the rent.

Warning signs of a scam

  • A price far below the normal rent for that area
  • An owner who is always abroad and asks you to transfer a deposit before you can view anything
  • Pressure to pay quickly or to use an unusual payment method
  • No contract, or a contract that does not match the advertisement

Ask for a video tour, check the address on a map, and confirm with your university if the listing is genuine. A reasonable landlord will answer these questions without pressure.

A temporary plan helps

If you cannot secure a long-term room before arrival, book a hostel or short-term stay for the first one or two weeks. It lets you view places in person, which is the most reliable way to avoid problems.

Before you sign

Read the contract carefully, including the notice period, the deposit and how it is returned, and who pays for what. Keep copies of everything and take dated photos of the room when you move in.
