Where to look

University dormitories, private dormitories such as Lux Rooms and Dean’s Home, and Facebook groups like Erasmus Life Budapest.

Good to know

  • Private dorms may ask for two months’ deposit.
  • Fake listings circulate each September, so see the room or video call first.
  • Guides most often name Budapest districts V, VI, VII, XI and XIII as student-friendly areas.

Where students live

Districts V, VI, VII, XI and XIII are the student-friendly areas in Budapest. Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs are 30–40% cheaper.

Before you pay or move

  • Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
  • See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
  • Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
  • Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
  • Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
