Accommodation in Austria
Students live in student residences, including those run by OeAD, or in shared flats called WGs in the main university cities.
OeAD runs the largest network, about 12,000 beds in Vienna, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz, Klagenfurt and Leoben, allocated first come, first served.
The most popular choice. Rent depends on the city, and Vienna sits at the top of the range.
Private rooms in Vienna typically cost more, and a studio costs more again.

Good to know
- Austria has no tradition of on-campus housing, so you search for a place yourself.
- OeAD contracts run per semester (winter: October to January, summer: March to June) and add application, deposit, cleaning and booking fees.
- Book early. OeAD refunds the application fee if it cannot offer you a room.
Monthly budget
€900–1,300 a monthCovers accommodation, food, social activities and public transport in Vienna and Salzburg. Residence permit rules also set a minimum monthly amount, about €613 if you are 24 or under and about €1,110 if older (2025 figures).
Before you pay or move
- Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
- See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
- Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
- Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
- Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
