Accommodation in Sweden

Housing is hard to find in the big cities, so ask your university early about help for international students.

Student roomSEK 2,500–6,500 / month

Study in Sweden gives this range for rent. Subsidised corridor rooms through student housing companies cost less than sublets.

Student queuesRegister on admission

Examples are SSSB (Stockholm), AF Bostäder (Lund), SGS (Gothenburg) and Studentstaden (Uppsala).

Private room or subletSEK 5,500–9,000

Private rooms cost more, and Stockholm is the most expensive.

Where to look

SSSB, AF Bostäder, BoPoolen, SGS, Studentstaden, and your university’s housing service.

Good to know

  • Join the student housing queue the day you are admitted, and some require a student union membership.
  • AF Bostäder opens to new students in early July and early December, once Swedish students have been notified.
  • Paying one month’s rent in advance is standard.

Monthly budget

SEK 9,000–14,000 a month

Stockholm is SEK 11,000–14,000, while Lund, Uppsala and Linköping are nearer SEK 8,500–11,000. Study in Sweden’s minimum budget is about SEK 10,314.

Where students live

Lund and Uppsala are the classic student towns, and Stockholm and Gothenburg have the toughest housing markets.

Before you pay or move

  • Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
  • See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
  • Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
  • Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
  • Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
