Accommodation in Estonia
Students use dormitories in Tartu and Tallinn or rent private rooms and flats.
Most universities have dormitories. At the University of Tartu, one place in a twin room was about €159 in 2024/25.
Prices vary between Tartu, Tallinn and smaller towns, and sharing a larger flat in the centre is common.
At Tartu, a twin room used by one person costs double the per-person price.

Good to know
- Send your dorm application about a month before arrival.
- Landlords may ask for the first month, an agent fee and a deposit up front.
- Watch for fake listings, and register your address after you move in.

Rents are slightly lower in Tartu than in Tallinn, and Tartu is very walkable.
Before you pay or move
- Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
- See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
- Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
- Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
- Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
