Accommodation in France

Options include CROUS university residences, which fill early, and private studios and shared flats. Paris is the most expensive city.

CROUS residence€200–450 / month

CROUS runs around 175,000 rooms and studios. Paris averages about €400, and the rest of France about €200.

Flatshare€380–900 / month

Flatshares (colocation) split the cost per person, and Paris is at the top of the range.

Private residence or studio€600–1,200 / month

Private residences are easier to book from abroad. A Paris studio is €800 or more.

Where to look

CROUS (trouverunlogement.lescrous.fr), Lokaviz, Studapart, the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris and Foyer International des Étudiantes.

Good to know

  • CROUS has few rooms for international students before arrival, so many students book a private residence first.
  • Landlords need a rental guarantee, such as Visale or a guarantor.
  • You may qualify for CAF housing aid, which lowers your rent.

Monthly budget

€900–1,800 a month

Most international students in Paris spend this much, depending mostly on accommodation. Your first month costs more.

Where students live

Paris is the most expensive city. Student-friendly suburbs in Île-de-France have lower rents.

Before you pay or move

  • Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
  • See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
  • Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
  • Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
  • Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
