Accommodation in Finland
Student housing foundations offer affordable apartments in most university cities, so apply as soon as you are admitted.
Housing foundations such as Hoas, AYY and VOAS rent shared flats and studios to students, with water included.
Plan for €500–800 a month around Helsinki. Some university studios start near €600.
Open-market rents in the Helsinki region typically start around €600 for a small flat.

Good to know
- Apply as soon as you are admitted. Hoas takes applications up to four months before study starts, and offers are often allocated by queue or lottery.
- Most flats are unfurnished.
- Most international students cannot receive the Kela housing allowance.
Where students live
Hoas serves Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen. Aalto students can also use AYY housing, and Tampere, Turku and Oulu have their own foundations.
Before you pay or move
- Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
- See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
- Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
- Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
- Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
