Accommodation in Portugal

Options include university residences and private flats. Rents have risen in Lisbon and Porto, so start early.

Residence hall€200–500 / month

University residences are the best way to cut costs, so apply as soon as you get your acceptance.

Room in a shared flat€250–650 / month

Porto is about €300–600, and Lisbon is the most expensive and rising. Some sources report even higher central Lisbon prices.

Utilities on top€70–130 / month

Listings often exclude utilities, so a “€450” room can cost €520–570.

Where to look

University residences, Uniplaces and other verified student platforms.

Good to know

  • Lisbon is roughly 15–20% more expensive than Porto.
  • Compare total monthly cost, not the headline rent.
  • Start early, because Lisbon and Porto have tight rental markets.

Monthly budget

€750–1,300 a month

Porto students typically spend €750–1,100 and Lisbon students €900–1,300, all in.

Where students live

In Porto, Paranhos (Asprela) is the main student district and Bonfim and Campanhã are cheaper. In Lisbon, Mouraria, Arroios and Almada cost less than Príncipe Real or Bairro Alto.

Before you pay or move

  • Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
  • See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
  • Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
  • Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
  • Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
