Accommodation in Greece
Students mostly rent private apartments or shared flats, and some public universities offer dormitories.
Private dorms in renovated buildings operate in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Komotini, Chios and Heraklion.
This is typical in Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion and Ioannina.
A small flat near the centre of Athens runs about €420–700, and Thessaloniki about €350–550.
Where to look
Private student residences, university noticeboards, property listing sites and word of mouth.
Good to know
- Rents have risen for three years running, especially in Athens.
- Deposits are typically 1–2 months’ rent, and rent rarely includes utilities.
- A nine-month lease in a tourist city can reduce the cost.
Where students live
In Athens, students favour Zografou, Ilisia, Pagkrati, Kypseli and Exarchia. In Thessaloniki, look at Rotonta, Kamara, Ano Poli, Agiou Dimitriou and Toumba.
Before you pay or move
- Get the contract in writing and read the rent, deposit, notice period and which utilities are included.
- See the room in person or on a live video call before you send any money.
- Ask how much the deposit is and when it is returned.
- Keep your admission letter and a passport copy ready, because housing offices and landlords ask for them.
- Book a short stay for your first nights in case your room is not ready.
